Draw the operation around the robot
Show where the product arrives, how it is presented, what the robot does and where the product goes next. Include tooling, fixtures, inspection and the adjacent machines in the discussion. Record product variants and the operator tasks that affect the arrangement.
The initial output can be a simple annotated flow, with the supplier and customer responsibilities beside each interface. It need not begin with a selected robot model.
Give each command an owner and a response
For each exchange, identify the sender, receiver, meaning and expected response. Readiness, a requested operation and completion are different states; they should not be treated as interchangeable.
ABB’s Production Manager documentation provides a concrete example of acknowledgement signals, timeouts and confirmation of PLC orders. The applicable sequence is specific to the controller and application; use the actual equipment documentation when designing it.
Define what happens when the sequence cannot continue
Discuss a missing part, unavailable downstream machine, unconfirmed operation or lost communication. Specify which equipment holds the current state, what information reaches the operator and what must be checked before resuming.
These questions form a project test list. The final restart and recovery behavior must be designed and validated for the installation, rather than copied from an illustrative sequence.
Treat safety responsibilities explicitly
The application includes the robot, tool, workpiece, surrounding equipment and people’s access. Operating positions and ordinary process signals alone do not establish a safe cell.
ABB’s guidance distinguishes the operating space from the space restricted through safety measures. The responsible specialists must assess the complete application and define the required protective functions and validation. This article is a scoping guide, not a safety design.
Accept the connected operation
Agree tests for the complete product sequence, required variants and relevant interruptions. Record interface behavior alongside any cycle measurement. A robot movement time alone does not describe the performance of the line.
